Standard operating procedures (SOPs): Backbone of an effective AIR system

Aug 6, 2022

From August 3-5, 2022, another pivotal three-day meeting was held to develop the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the Animal Identification and Registration (AIR) system. This meeting was crucial in establishing a structured approach to managing and maintaining the AIR system, ensuring efficiency and accuracy across all related processes.

Throughout several intensive sessions, participants successfully developed twelve comprehensive SOPs, each addressing a key business process within the AIR system.

The developed SOPs are as follows:

  1. ANI PAS System Maintenance/User Management: This SOP outlines the protocols for maintaining the ANI PAS system and managing user access, ensuring secure and efficient operation.
  2. Cattle Ear Tag Distribution: This SOP provides detailed instructions for the distribution of ear tags to ensure each animal is properly tagged for identification.
  3. Actual Process of Cattle/Animal Identification and Registration: This SOP describes the step-by-step process for identifying and registering cattle, ensuring consistency and accuracy.
  4. Identification and Registration of Newborn Animals: This SOP focuses on the procedures for promptly identifying and registering newborn calves to maintain an up-to-date database.
  5. Cattle Movement Data Collection: This SOP outlines the methods for collecting and recording data on cattle movement, crucial for tracking and managing livestock.
  6. Distribution of Form 1: This SOP details the distribution process of Form 1, which is essential for documentation and compliance.
  7. Change of Livestock Owner: This SOP provides guidelines for updating the system when there is a change in livestock ownership, ensuring accurate records.
  8. Removal of Animals from the System: This SOP specifies the steps for removing animals from the system, whether due to death, sale, slaughter, or other reasons, ensuring the database remains up-to-date.
  9. Replacement of Lost Ear Tags: This SOP describes the procedure for replacing lost ear tags, and maintaining the integrity of the identification system.
  10. Technical and Information Support (Maintenance): This SOP details the support processes for technical issues and system maintenance, ensuring continuous operation.
  11. Identification and Registration of Imported Animals: This SOP provides guidelines for the identification and registration of animals imported into the system, ensuring compliance with international standards.
  12. Identification and Registration of Exported Animals: This SOP outlines the procedures for identifying and registering animals that are exported, ensuring accurate records for export compliance.

The development of these SOPs marks a significant milestone in the AIR system project, providing a robust framework for consistent and accurate animal identification and registration. These procedures will help maintain high data quality standards and support the effective management of the AIR system.
